Virtual Run Fundraising Campaign

The Social Impact Organization

Turtle Conservation Society

TCS is the first non-governmental and non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation of freshwater turtles in Malaysia. The aim of the Society is to bring about the recovery of depleted wild populations of turtles, with particular reference to freshwater turtles, in Malaysia through partnerships with like-minded organisations, individuals and local communities as well as through its own programmes.

The Design Challenge

Design a solution that makes TCS’ mission to save the terrapins nationally known in order to fund its conservation and research projects a sustainable and cost-effective manner.
The Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia (TCS) is driven to save turtles, particularly freshwater turtles, from extinction. The threats are real, more so for the critically endangered river terrapins. The river terrapins take 20 years to attain sexual maturity – coupled with the illegal consumption and sale of its eggs, and the continued destruction to its natural habitat – these factors directly contribute to its extinction.
Since 2011, TCS has embarked on a mission to save the river terrapins from becoming extinct, through its research and a community-based conservation project, education and public outreach programmes. Numerous fund-raising activities, such as terrapin adoption campaigns and merchandising have been initiated to generate income to fund its conservation efforts.
TCS currently works very closely with the local communities in Kemaman. A River Terrapin Conservation Centre has been set up in the village and it consists of an ex-situ hatchery, a terrapin head-starting pond and a Turtle Gallery that houses the skeletons, bones and wet specimens of eight turtle species.

The 'A' Team: HUNGRY

The Proposed Solution

Run for River Terrapin is a virtual run event where runners get to enjoy their favourite run sport while being part of a meaningful conservation effort. River terrapin has been declining in population due to exploitation and habitat destruction; today with the conservation work carried out by the Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia (TCS), the population appears to be recovering, yet more effort can be further initiate.
This run aims to elevate public awareness of this critically endangered species and raise funds for existing and upcoming terrapin conservation work. But it doesn’t stop there. This run will share inforgraphic informations for participants to be part as citizen scientist and act to help spread awareness further and deeper in Malaysia and throughout the world via any means of platform.
The registration will starts in July and the run in August. Runners will be provided with medal, tshirt and an E-certificate. They can also purchase add-ons from our run platform and all these money will be allocated in the conservation work of TCS.
