The Social Impact Organization

Startup Johor

StartupJohor is a fast growing, hyper-local social enterprise dedicated to building the startup & entrepreneurial ecosystem in the southern region of Malaysia. Since its inception in 2014, StartupJohor has been working with various industry stakeholders in and around Johor’s urban areas.

The Design Challenge

Design a solution to spur graduates and young adults to launch their own startups or work in one, as their first career choice in Johor.
StartupJohor is a social enterprise dedicated to building and expanding the startup & entrepreneurial ecosystem in the southern region of Malaysia. Its activities include developing local entrepreneurs, supporting and accelerating high-potential startup companies. To date, StartupJohor has 1,300 community members, held 100 Startup programs & events, and supported the launch of 75 projects/startups/businesses. While these numbers are impressive, StartupJohor’s mission to grow the ecosystem is hindered by the sizeable pool of young local talents who prefer to seek professional careers in established corporations, especially those in neighboring Singapore.

The 'A' Team: 4 EVER YOUNG

The Proposed Solution

Project Germination is an initiative driven by students, aimed to promote startup culture and grow the ecosystem through improving startup-university relationship. The project started off with a survey targeted to university students and also local startup companies to investigate their expectations about both parties. The questionnaire led to an arrangement of local startup visiting tour, due to its popularity from the survey, which resulted further mutual understanding between students and startup.
Through the 3-month campaign, we hope that we are able to (i) create more work opportunities in startup amoung youngster at University level, (ii) promote startup culture among university students, (iii) provide startup companies access to the talent pool in Johor.
Our resolution is to be the bridge between Universities and startup companies in Johor, providing an all rounded startup experience to students and creating a talent pool for startup companies.

Follow up on students who had startup experience
3) Upon meeting with Feng, he was interested to know more about these students who worked in startup from the survey, and would like to know their stand and opinion about startup, so we conducted a targeted interview on more specific question (thanks to @Bryan Teh for doing the interview).

Startup tour from University
4) We’ve identified that the highest rated student-startup engagement is in the order of Internship->short-courses/training->visiting to startup->Mentorship->startup visiting uni*. Therefore, we are now liaising with 3 ‘startup heroes’ of Johor namely, DFAutomation, Techcare Innovation, Shashinki (thanks to Feng and Pei Yee for connecting us), to proceed our plan or student-startup engagement. We’ve setup a pilot-scale visiting trip to send 25 students from UTM, University of Southampton Malaysia, University of Reading Malaysia to these 3 companies on 3rd of May, Friday. They will be doing a touring and Q&A session, and we are arranging a CV-cover letter drop in session (not confirmed) for internship opportunities.
