PiPenang Digital Application

The Social Impact Organization

Penang Institute

Penang Institute is dedicated to reflecting the heightened ambitions of the state to secure Penang’s reputation as an intellectual hub and the culture capital of the country, and to enhance Penang’s reputation in ASEAN and beyond.

The Design Challenge

Design a solution that encourages individuals and families to take responsibility and action to achieve a green and digital-savvy lifestyle.
Penang Institute is a think tank that has a deep passion to establish Penang’s reputation as an intellectual hub and cultural capital of Malaysia, and to enhance the state’s reputation regionally. The next challenge taken up by the institute is visualising Penang Chief Minister’s vision to be a family-focused green and smart state that inspires the nation by 2030 (Penang2030).
One of the challenges that stand in the way of this vision is that certain segments of society are apathetic, lacking awareness, responsibility and initiative to participate in this ambition. Others include civil service lethargy and the populistic political culture that plagues Malaysia in general. Penang Institute wants to draw people out of this comfort zone, starting with the family and with issues associated with gender, eldercare and education.

The Proposed Solution

There are several solutions our team has decided to implement it in the future. First, our team will introduce the ‘Pi Penang’ mobile application. This app is a platform for the community to access certain information within their community in a short period of time. Next, our team will also include several convenience apps such as 3R Location (Reuse, Reduce and Recycle) and volunteering opportunity platform to achieve the goals of the Penang 2030, ‘Digital-savvy and green-oriented family’ Finally, this application will also becomes a platform for tourist to access information regarding tourist attractions and public transportations. Our team is expected to complete this application by the end of August and the community can utilize this app in the future.

How We Did It?

The
Game Plan

Phase 1 | Planned Activities

Activity:
1.1. Conduct a survey via online platform about the experience of using mobile application such as Grab, Food Panda and JobStreet Malaysia in the state of Penang. We are targeted to get at least 200 respondents as data samples.
1.2. Present all collected relevant data from the respondents to Penang Institute and discuss ways of improvement to our prototype.
1.3. Present to Penang Institute new several features that we already discussed with our group members. As an example, volunteering opportunity alert, weather forecast, and emergency update are the features that we decided to add it to our prototype ‘Pi Penang’. However, it depends on the survey and feasibility study that we conducted at the first phase. If the respondents are positive with our features in this app, we will approach to the volunteering organizations and any related agencies within State of Penang to discuss more details.

Progress Summary

This month, we have already discussed a few modifications for our application ‘Pi Penang’. We have agreed to add several functions, which are ‘Volunteering’, ‘Job Vacancy for private sector’, and ‘emergency news update’. All members agreed to proceed with this idea and discuss it to our mentors next month.
Unfortunately, Many team members quit the project and there was only 1 member left in the team. After a few weeks, the team is reformed again with 4 new members and continued to work on the project.
After the new team discussed the project with the mentors, they decided to focus on the food ordering feature from the previous app with some modifications. Rather than just ordering food from a restaurant, the app will let users purchase home-cooked food from the needy locals. The team completed the beta app ”Pi Penang” by this phase and obtain some feedback to improve the app.
They decided to rename the app to “Chiak Bo” because many think that the name” Pi Penang” is irrelevant to the purpose of the app. Besides, they created a new logo that represents the app better and developed a new feature called “surprise me”( A feature to match a random dish from cooks in the app. The users will only know the dish when they get their meal from the deliverer).

What we Hope for

Future Impact

Chiak Bo is a food-ordering app that is created to help underprivileged and B40 community in Penang, by providing these groups of people with an opportunity to earn an additional side income through selling their own home-cooked food.
On the other hand, Chiak Bo is a platform that encourages people's engagement in uplifting and transforming the individuals or households in need, by experiencing home-cooked meals from a wide range of options available on the app anywhere and anytime they want.
Chiak Bo will be able to help raise the awareness of the public to get involved in social development and always contribute to the society that they live in.
The team expects Chiak Bo will be used by 285,000 people in Penang in 5 years and will be able to obtain a revenue of RM 343K
