AnonyApparel, A Clothing Line by Stateless Youth

The Social Impact Organization

Etania School

We aim to provide quality education for marginalised, undocumented, and stateless children in Sabah, Malaysia. There are many thousands of children without access to education and Etania is determined to provide access to beneficial and relevant learning programmes for these children. All children have the right to education and this is our pledge to help as many as we can.

The Design Challenge

Design a sustainable solution that equip Etania graduates with the right work skills to ensure they have a brighter future.
Etania provides education to marginalised and stateless children across Sabah. Currently, it has 10 schools serving 1,000+ students. One of the challenges it faces is ensuring that their students are equipped with the right skills to find suitable jobs once they leave school. Generally, they graduate in their mid-teens and most do not have access to formal tertiary education given their undocumented status and financial position. Furthermore, they are not able to work legally. The students primarily communicate in Bahasa Malaysia.

The Proposed Solution

Our project, The Anony Apparel, aims to equip the children at Ethania School, Beaufort with sewing skills through intensive workshops, to create sustainable fashion products such as t-shirts and accessories and to provide an online platform for the students to sell their products. The students in Ethania School are well educated and fairly taught with different types of hands-on skills, however there are lack of work opportunities in Sabah which they will have difficulties to sustain their livelihood in the future. Our team has come with a solution to provide a one-day professional sewing skill workshop, carried out by a tailor. The students will learn to create a fashionable T-shirt with local geometric motifs and accessories such as denim bags by reusing used garments purchased from thrift shops in Sabah. Once the products have been created, we would invite the students to model their own products but with their identities hidden by wearing a mask to cover their faces.

After photoshoot session with the students, the products will be marketed through online platform such as Facebook and Instagram throughout the period of the project. The team will be responsible to organise placement of orders as well as delivery of products to the customers. All the income generated (after deduction of cost) will belong to the students and the school. We hope after the project, the online platforms can be continued administered by the students themselves to continue to benefit from the sewing skills they are equipped with. Throughout the period of 3 months, we target to sell the products for at least 50 pieces.
