WHAT MAKES ME.REKA?

Pedagogy

The 21st century future demands us to redefine the way we view education. Our classrooms need to be transformed to allow us to equip, and adapt, our students for the rapidly changing future. At ME.REKA, we encourage learning through hands-on projects and immersive experiences. Students get to discover their creativity and imagination, work collaboratively with others and, most importantly, are encouraged to experiment and make mistakes. This allows students to develop their problem solving and critical thinking skills, teaching them how to learn. What makes Me.reka unique, is the entire learning experience is democratised. Here students learn by pursuing their passion and interests, taking ownership of their own self-development.

Ashvin
Ashvin
Ashvin became interested in electronics while studying sound engineering at University. The audio equipment he needed was expensive so, to tackle this issue, Ashvin began exploring DIY electronics, repairing broken audio equipment (like reel-to-reel machines) or building simple circuits to make his music.

Ashvin’s final year project was to improve the way musicians interact with modular synthesisers by designing an efficient control voltage controller using electric paint as capacitive proximity sensor, with the aim of improving the interactivity between the artist and instrument.

After studying, Ashvin soon found a home at Biji-biji Initiative where he could explore his growing passion for electronics. Ashvin likes to mix electronics and art; he has worked on various art installations, including a laser harp and aquaponics table. He is also interested in renewable energy and likes to share this with the public through interactive power generators (in the form of an energy playground). He has recently completed a project using ultracapacitors to store energy generated from humans.

Ashvin views electronics as a creative art; he loves the challenge and satisfaction of making something work. He want to spread his love for electronics, and urges people not to be scared – embrace it!

OUR VALUES

ME.REKA in Malay can refer to the verb ‘creating’ or the collective noun ‘they’. Simply put, ME.REKA is a place for people to make things. Whilst the idea of a makerspace is becoming more common around the world, ME.REKA seeks to expand the concept to a more all-encompassing, inclusive platform. A facility that draws not only those with the determination to realise their idea, but also one that engages individuals to discover the desire to create within them.

Inclusive and Accessible Learning

At ME.REKA, we believe that everyone is a maker. By providing you with the right tools, space and guidance, making is made easy for you. We believe that everyone has an innate capacity to make and learn. ME.REKA is not built around academic capacity: we believe it is never too late to learn something new; age, background or education do not limit you.

We also believe there is no single right way to learn; learning is personal and everyone learns differently. Our alternative educational model supports this by incorporating different learning styles into everything we do. We think about the world in all the ways we experience it; we believe that creative and innovative ideas and designs are best developed through an experiential learning experience which combines kinesthetic, visual, abstract, auditory and verbal learning styles. Making is more fun this way!

Sustainable Solutions

In today’s consumer society, the value of making is often forgotten. It is often simpler to buy a new product, than to make or repair it. We aim to promote a sustainable mindset as, through learning how to fix things, people are less likely to throw things away. We source from sustainable suppliers and encourage makers to consider repurposing old products and/or using upcycled materials in their designs. We believe that making gives us control over the world we live in; how we make has impact and can make a difference.

At ME.REKA, we cherish the traditional artisan value of creating products that are made-to-last and created locally. We aim to bridge the inequality gap by supporting decentralised production; we connect our makers to local industries, enabling them to sell their products on the local market

We support the UN Sustainable Development Goals:

Everyone involved with Biji-biji earns adequate wage to live a good quality of life, and able to provide for themselves and their dependents.

We try to eliminate hazardous waste in our production processes. When it cannot be avoided, proper handling, use and waste management of hazardous chemicals is observed.

We aim to make education accessible to everyone nationwide, using fun and easy-to understand pedagogical approaches, combining arts with sciences and ensuring life long learning.

We aim to uphold gender equality commitments for both sexes at all times.

We aim to ensure that Biji-biji’s direct and indirect supply chain is ethical.

We aim to support and integrate SMEs and SEs into Biji-biji’s value chain and markets.

We aim to eliminate discrimination in its all forms.

We reduce, reuse and recycle materials used and waste generated in the design, prototyping, manufacturing, packaging, delivery and return of products developed.

We adhere to Open Book Finance principles.

We implement and stay on track towards achieving sustainable development.

Open-source Collaboration

ME.REKA supports the open-source concept. We believe in collaborating and sharing our designs with other makers, and we encourage you to do the same. We believe the best ideas are made together; together we expand the possibilities/limits of making. Collaboration on projects of intense personal interest drive the need to share ideas and lessons learned more than external incentives like grades.

Makers share designs, code, and ideas globally but making occurs locally. Makers share their expertise with a worldwide audience. “We” are smarter than “me” is the lesson for educators.

Integration of Disciplines

Science and art are rarely valued equally (with science normally given higher credit). At ME.REKA, we believe that the process of having original ideas that have value comes from mixing different disciplines together. We believe that combining multiple industries and fields of knowledge creates an innovative, collaborative and inclusive space where anything is possible.

All children are born artists, the problem is to remain an artist as we grow up.” – Pablo Picasso
